You have to be committed to maintain complete oral hygiene if you want to take advantage of your orthodontic treatment. Once you have worn the braces for placing your jaw, facial bones and teeth in right posture, you are then required to lay proper emphasis on maintaining perfect oral cleanliness and care. While you wear braces there are many chances of penetration of plaque and bacteria on your teeth.

There are a number of problems that can generate with the formation of plaque and improper hygiene and are mentioned as follows:

    * Decalcification – When plaque gets accumulated around your braces, it creates permanent lines and white spots on your teeth. This is known as decalcification which is first step of tooth decaying.


    * Gingivitis comes as the initial stage that is followed by a number of gum diseases. In this stage you will experience irritation, bleeding and swelling of gums which will make you uncomfortable.


    * Periodontitis – In this the plaque that has built over the time period will create calculus to irritate gums and cause gaps between gums and teeth. It can even challenge the health of your adjoining teeth.


    * Advanced Periodontal Diseases – This is stage where the gum diseases start developing lead to various teeth and gums problems.

You are required to follow the below mentioned oral hygiene steps:

    * You should pay regular visits to your dentist for routine checkups.


    * You should avoid consuming sticky food materials especially sugared foods like cookies, candies, caramels, sweets etc. Also you should avoid snacking of starched food items such as cereals, bread and crackers that can lead to acid formation.


    * Apart from your brushing process you should regularly rinse the teeth and should go for regular cleanings to make keep the teeth in the perfect form.


    * A person taking orthodontic treatment is also expected to consume a balanced diet so as to maintain clean and healthy teeth for a long time period.


    * You should brush at least three times a day that includes two times after meal and once before bedtime. The brush should have round bristles that enable you to gain maximum and thorough cleaning of your teeth.


    * Use the toothpaste having fluoride in it so as to avoid germs and plaque formation.
